In the water I was better than them. I was faster than anyone. Those girls might have grown up with pools, but they didn't have the passion that coursed through my veins. I swam because it had been the only thing that kept me afloat from the sinking despair of a life of solemn destitution.

And it was that passion that allowed me to swim faster. To do better. To make them hate me even more.

"Alcott, good job! Great time today and wonderful energy. Keep it up and keep practicing, then perhaps Rosewood will do well at the meet. Michele, Heather." The two girls shot me a bad look as I smiled at Coach Wilson and her kind words of praise. "Perhaps a little less on the gossiping and a little more on the actual swimming, yeah?”

They threw me a glare as Coach Wilson gave the rest of the girls her feedback. I heaved myself out of the pool so I could rush to shower and change before everyone else.

"Hey Alcott!" In my surprise, I swiveled in the direction of the voice that called my name just in time to see a wet and heavy towel hurling towards me. "You left your filthy towel."

I caught it against my body, groaning at the stupidity. “This isn’t mine,” I argued, throwing it back at her. She jumped back as if my cooties could give her a disease, grasping the towel between two fingers and depositing it on the bench beside her.

“Eew,” she sneered. “I guess we’ll need to burn that now.”

I pivoted in place and immediately took a step forward, flailing my arms as my foot caught on something. I tripped forward as the other girls moved away, wincing as I caught myself against the tiled floor.

A burning sensation traveled up my ankle, making me grimace as I cradled the already swelling flesh in my hands. Heather backed away a step, removing her foot from the equation as I glared up at her knowingly.

She didn’t smile, faking concern, but we both knew she’d intentionally tripped me. We also both knew nobody would believe me if I said that it had been anything but an accident.
